They live in Michigan, and I live in Chicago. I know I will get in to this school, and therefore I want to go there without using financial aid. My student loan interest rate is 6.8%. I only have one loan, is it possible to refinance it into a lower rate?

6.8% seems high. My mortgage and car interest rates are much lower than that. I am just unaware as to how to get it lowered.

that is a good rate for a student loan actually…. mortgage and car loans generally have low interest rates because they have something tangeable attached to them as colateral… not so for student loans.

the only way to get this lowered is to find another loan with a lower rate and pay off the old loan… You are not eligible for a consolidation loan because in order to do that you have to have more than one loan (plus, you wouldn’t want to consolidate until you were finished with school anyway)… or you could take a loan out against something of value (like your house) to get a lower rate.. I wouldn’t recommend this!

My parents cosigned a student loan for a family friend but that person isn’t paying loan, what can they do?

So, I have my associates in paraprofessional education and now I’m doing my bachelor in history. now I have a year left till I am completely done but I’m considering in changing my major into early childhood education because I am interested in working in a day care center – become a Nursery teacher – But my only problem is that I owe already a big amount of student loan and im so worried that if I switch majors that I would owe more! Its so frustrating, because I dont want to spend my whole life just spending my paychecks on paying off my student loans. So confused!

You may not need to change majors at all. You already have an associates degree in education. I don’t believe that you *need* a bachelors in education to work in a daycare. I think it may be that your bachelors in history will work just fine for you. Talk to the education advisor at your college to learn more about how this might work.

You may very well be able to get a job in a daycare center with your bachelors in history, plus that associates in paraprofessional education. What’s actually key now is you getting some work experience *now* in that type of setting, so either get a part-time job in a daycare, or else get an internship in one for winter break or summer break, or do student teaching in a daycare.

Your associates in this field will help you. Having a bachelors in any field will help you. Having work experience in a daycare would *really* help you. One thing you could consider, which might also help and shouldn’t extend your time to graduation, is doing a minor in education or early childhood education. Again, talk to the education advisor on your campus about that option.

Are all colleges, even private, considered nonprofit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations?

Basically, I’m wondering whether or not a teaching job at a private college would count as an eligible job for Public Service Loan Forgiveness. Under the new IBR repayment program, the requirement is that you work at a non-profit, tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organization, or for the federal or state government, in order to receive loan forgiveness after ten years.

Most private colleges are. Some, like Phoenix University, are run for profit. Ask the college.

Low-interest private student loans?

I’ve already applied for the FAFSA, didn’t get much aid at all. And i’ve been applying for private student loans, but apparently i’m not eligible for the one’s i’ve done already (because my dad was laid off so now our family income is too low for them. Figures, at our greatest time of need they would bail out on helping us). So i’m wondering what are some private student loans that have low interest rates, and maybe if i apply to a whole bunch then i’ll end up getting at least one.
Well I know that there aren’t any really ‘low’ interest private loans, but what i meant was what are some of the private loans that have lowER interest rates when compared to other private loans. Like a DCU private loan (which I didn’t qualify for) or the CitiBank loan (which has like a 17% interest rate which I refuse to pay, so i’m not even bothering with that one).

There is no such thing as a low interest private student loan. All of them will be the sub-prime variable interest rates that will be twice what you’ll get through fafsa.

You can attend many, many, many schools with what you get by borrowing in federal student loans.

You have two options:
1. Perhaps you should look at cheaper schools if your school costs more than what you are being offered. Dependent freshman can borrow up to 5500 a year in federal stafford loans (fixed rate interest) without a cosigner and without a credit check.

2. Your Dad can opt to take out a parent PLUS loan instead of trying to cosign for a private loan. The requirements are MUCH less strict than a private loan so he will prob qualify. This is a loan that HE is responsible for paying, not you. Be sure he knows you will likely need him to do this every year for all your college career if your school is so expensive you can’t afford it with just your loans alone. If he is denied the parent PLUS loan you will be able to borrow more than normal in federal Stafford loans to help you better afford that school.

Yes, there is an offer from the Global Student Loan Corporation at www.gslc.com. But they do offer loans for special Universities only. I tried this possibilty also, but I’m not attending the right College, unfortunately.

There are pros and cons to consolidating, especially when you are still in school.

The biggest advantage is that you would obtain an interest rate that’s almost 2% lower than the one you’d recieve next year (after 7/1/06). The biggest downside to consolidating is that you will lose your 6-month grace period (9 months for Perkins), so your first payment will probably be due within a month after you graduate. You will, however, retain the ability to apply for deferments and forbearances. Even better, the subsidized portion of your Stafford loans will retain their interest subsidy (meaning that, even if you consolidate your Subsidized Stafford loans with other unsubsidized loans, the government will continue to pay interest on those Sub loans any time that you are in school or in-grace — a great “perk” if you plan on going to Grad. school).

If you decide to go to graduate school, your consolidation loan will be eligible for an in-school deferment (just as your Stafford and/or Perkins loans would be if you didn’t consolidate).

Keep in mind that the loan for your last semester (Fall 2006, I assume?) might not be able to be added into this pre-July consolidation unless it’s been fully disbursed by the time you apply to consolidate. But if you consolidate now and later borrow new loans (in grad school, or in the 1 semester you have left), you DO have the option to obtain a new consolidation loan that can include (a) your old consolidation loan and (b) your new Stafford and/or Perkins loans. (Basically, this is the only case in which a student is ever allowed to “reconsolidate.”) If you choose to do this, just remember that your future Stafford Loans will be offered at a rate of 6.8% — so adding them into your consolidation (which you’ll get at about 4.75%) will probably increase the overall interest rate on your Consolidation Loan.

It gets a little complicated, I know. All things considered, if you think you can handle losing your grace period, consolidating is probably your best move. 2% in interest can really add up over 12-30 years.

Should I pay off interest on my student loan, or pay down the principal balance on another loan?

I have about 43k in student loans. One is a 35k consolidation loan that has interest built up on it. The other is an 8k loan with no interest built up yet. Would it be smarter to put the money I have toward paying down the interest on the bigger loan, or would it be better to pay down the principal balance of the smaller loan? I have no idea what would be a better thing to do. Please help.

The rule always is:
Pay off the debt that has the highest interest rate.
Sounds like one does not even have interest yet.
So the answer is simple.

Don’t pay off student loans unless you have that emergency fund in place.
This needs to be at least 6 months worth of living expenses.
And should be put in a savings or a cd that you can break.
No one, absolutely no one should make any financial moves without this fund.
You never know if you could lose a job, have medical not covered by insurance, or have major car repair.
